Start your review of Queen of the North. An interesting historical story of a time period I'm less familiar with. As with anything regarding royals and gentry of that time there is intrigue, scandal, plotting and fighting and all is included here.
It felt well researched and there was a lot to take in. A little too much for me, in some parts it was a little weighty but overall an enjoyable read.

So, when John of Gaunts exiled son Henry of Bolingbroke returns to England while Richard is visiting Ireland, he can rally support to replace Richard as king.
But for Elizabeth Mortimer and her family, there is only one rightful King — her eight-year-old nephew, Edmund. But there is little support for another child king: Richard II had been king since he was ten years old, and Henry is an adult.
But what of Elizabeth? Can she reconcile her divided loyalties? At what cost? The novel is set between and and follows the ambitions and fortunes of the Mortimer and Percy families while Henry IV struggles against plots and rebellions.
What would be your ambition now? Reading this novel gave me more insight into the competing claims for the throne at this time. It also gave me more background into the later struggles between Lancaster and York.

Anne O'Brien has written a series of books looking at the lives of lesser known female players in medieval English history. It's marvellous to see people centre stage in a novel that most people seem to ignore.
When you read the Plantagenet family trees in some novels, it's easy to form the erroneous opinion that the monarchs had few children. In reality, the family trees where Anne O'Brien has written a series of books looking at the lives of lesser known female players in medieval English history.
In reality, the family trees where large, sprawling, and intertwined. The books was well written, well researched and entertaining.
There is a smidgeon of romance, between Elizabeth and Henry, but not with her second husband. Anne O'Brien is pragmatic about marriage at that time period.
Highly recommended. May 28, Amanda rated it really liked it. This little Ginger Book Geek is a history nerd although my tastes are usually limited to the last couple of centuries- what you might call modern history.
Oh my goodness what a read this proved to be. I absolutely loved reading it but more about that in a bit. I absolutely loved the setting in the North East of England, which is where I live.
Place names were mentioned that are This little Ginger Book Geek is a history nerd although my tastes are usually limited to the last couple of centuries- what you might call modern history.
Place names were mentioned that are familiar to me. Some names of the well to do families were familiar too. For example: the Percy family are just as important today as they were back then.
There were lots of twists, turns and stomach churning moments and moments where I almost had to read through my hands as I genuinely feared what was going to happen next.
It took me a little while to get used to the old fashioned language that was used back in the day but I soon got over that. Reading this book became an addiction that I just had to feed.
King in the North feminine equivalent being Queen in the North is the title given to the ruler of the North during its time as an independent kingdom , before and after the coming of the Targaryens.
A colloquial title also used for the rulers of the North was the " Kings of Winter ". House Stark ruled as Kings in the North stretching back into the mists of time, before written history began six thousand years ago, when the Andals invaded all of southern Westeros.
According to legend, the first King in the North was Brandon Stark, better known as Bran the Builder , who lived eight thousand years ago. According to the legends, he led the forces of the North in the War for the Dawn against the White Walkers and built the Wall to guard against their return, and also began construction of Winterfell.
The Kings in the North were successfully able to fend off the Andals from invading, holding the line of the Neck at the choke point of Moat Cailin.
As a result, the North remained the only independent kingdom of the First Men , with little to no ethnic imprint by the Andals.
This also meant that the Faith of the Seven practiced by the Andals gained little foothold in the North, where the Kings of Winter continued their worship of the Old Gods of the Forest.
Although all the kings of Westeros sent men to join the Night's Watch , the Kings in the North, due to their proximity to the Wall, had the duty of policing the Watch when needed.
According to emergency responders, the ship took approximately an hour to sink, giving passengers time to evacuate into lifeboats. Eyewitness reports confirmed the approximate time between the accident and the sinking and also suggest that the ship sank stern first.
The ship's captain , Colin Henthorne, was off watch and asleep in his bunk at the time of the accident. The second mate, Keven Hilton was on break, leaving the fourth mate, Karl Lilgert, in command.
On March 26, , BC Ferries released its internal investigation into the sinking. The report concluded that Queen of the North failed to make the required or any course changes at Sainty Point, and that the ship proceeded straight on an incorrect course for 4 nautical miles 7.
The investigation found no evidence of alterations of speed at any time during the transit of Wright Sound and concluded that human factors were the primary cause of the sinking.
A large number of small fishing and recreational vessels from Hartley Bay were the first on the scene to answer the distress call, arriving in a fleet of small watercraft in the dead of night to pick up survivors.
Originally the evacuation of the ship was reported to be a smooth one; however, stories of chest high water and trapped crew members surfaced on March According to the official BC Ferries press release, 99 of the passengers and crew were safely evacuated with only a few minor injuries, and many of them found refuge in nearby Hartley Bay.
Two people, Shirley Rosette and Gerald Foisy of Mile House, British Columbia , apparently failed to reach the lifeboats and died when the ship sank.
In addition, the couple did not contact relatives after the sinking. When the ferry was located by submersible, the two missing passengers were not found in the wreck.
The response by BC Ferries CEO David Hahn was that, although this was a catastrophic event, the emergency response by the crew is evidence of the safety of ferry travel.
Hahn also stated a top-speed collision with Gil Island would "rip apart the hull of any ship, even a massive cruise ship ". Despite these events, the Premier expressed confidence in the ferry system, saying that "The fleet is safe.
Not only is the fleet safe, but it is manned by professional crews that are trained in safety. Coastal villages served by Queen of the North expressed concern about replacement transportation, as many of the small communities rely on BC Ferries not only for transport, but for food, mail and supplies.
And her story closes in a way that proves it. After Tyrion Lannister convinces representatives of the Seven Kingdoms that her brother Bran deserves to be king because he has the least ego, Sansa steps forward to demand that the North remain independent.
And you'll be a good king. Within seconds, phones were ringing throughout the village of Men ran to the dock for their trawlers and skiffs, while women began preparing food and hot drinks, collecting blankets and warm clothes and heading to the community center to await survivors.
Reece had just fired up his ft. He had forgotten that his niece and her daughter were traveling on the Queen. He revved his hp engine and sped into the darkness.
In Victoria, the province's capital, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, the Rescue Coordination Centre scanned for ships in the vicinity of the Queen.
They were lucky. While pulling up anchor, the icebreaker dispatched the Laurier 1 , a rigid-hull inflatable boat. Its twin hp outboard engines can generate a top speed of 45 knots, which meant the rescue craft could reach the scene in 45 minutes.
With the ship listing heavily to starboard, the crew directed confused passengers, some in pajamas, to the lifeboats. One woman, unaware of the collision, complained, "What a silly time to hold a fire drill!
In orderly fashion, the passengers descended Jacob's ladders into two wooden lifeboats and three inflatable rafts.
Clarke boarded the last raft. Ten feet down, it stopped with a jerk. Fearful they would free-fall 55 ft.
